Erskine

This year Erskine celebrated the opening of a brand new service to support Veterans in Scotland.

The Erskine Transitional Supported Accommodation in Bishopton, Renfrewshire supports Service leavers and Veterans who have encountered difficulties in transition and need a little help to begin the next chapter of their lives. It offers them a safe place to live for up to two years, where they can learn job skills, access support services, enjoy the charity’s leading activity centre, and meet others in the same position.

The accommodation is offered with wraparound support where each resident receives a bespoke support package tailored to suit their needs, including mental health support, skills development, training, and work experience, as well as job opportunities with local business partners.

A little help to begin the next chapter of their lives

The support is aimed at equipping Veterans with the skills to move onto sustained employment and long-term accommodation in an area of their choice. If you think you or your workplace could support this project, please get in touch.

2022 also marked the 40th anniversary of the Falklands Anniversary, The Falklands War was one of the largest conflicts since World War II. 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders lost their lives.

At Erskine, thanks to the generosity of supporters, we unveiled Scotland’s only memorial to the fallen soldiers during this battle. Based on the Erskine Veteran’s Village the memorial offers a
place for remembrance and reflection. The “Shadow of the Brave”, a 5ft Corten steel sundial, is modelled on the silhouette of Erskine Veteran Bill McDowall kneeling and paying his respects to his fallen comrades.

Bill, now 61, served in the Falklands as a 21-year-old and now works and resides in the Erskine Veterans Village. If you would like to read more about the Falkland’s Anniversary or to hear Bill’s story, visit: www.erskine.org.uk/falklands
